Ranji Trophy 2022-23
The Ranji Trophy is the oldest and most prominent first-class domestic cricket competition, started in 1934 during British Rule. It is a homegrown competition that has gained enormous popularity in the Indian cricket fraternity.
The trophy is named after the revered Ranjitsinhji Vibhaji Jadeja- the first Indian Test player who played for British and the team Sussex. The championship consists of 38 Ranji teams representing the particular states and regions of cricket associations of the Indian mainland.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the highest governing body of Indian cricket, governs the tournament entirely. Since its inception, Ranji Trophy has been associated with the very heart of native cricketing talents. It is known as the stepping stone to Indian cricket.
Even in the era of fast-paced Indian Premier T20 cricket, the tournament has maintained its legacy and uniqueness. Cricketing fans religiously follow live scores of the Ranji Trophy, besides enthusiastically watching live matches of the league. It has emerged as a common trend among aspiring cricketers, who see Ranji Trophy results as the first significant stepping stone to play for the Men in Blue.
Ranji Trophy History
The journey of the Ranji Trophy commenced in July 1934, following a historic rendezvous without the cricket fraternity at that time. The Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh, bestowed the trophy. The introductory Ranji Trophy match occurred between Madras and Mysore at the famous Chepauk Stadium on 4 November 1934.
Since then, the tournament has come a long way, especially with the BCCI as its governing body. The tournament has taken place every year since its inception. However, it faced suspension for the first time ever due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020-21.
The news spread like a wildfire, making the 2020-21 Ranji Trophy season a nightmare for cricket players and fans. As the pandemic came under control, the 2021-22 season witnessed the Madhya Pradesh and Mumbai cricket teams as the tournament champion and runner-up respectively.
Ranji Trophy Seasons
Starting from 1934, the Ranji Trophy completed its 86th edition in 2019-20. In its remarkable history, the Mumbai Ranji team (Bombay) has topped the Ranji Trophy leaderboard with an incredible 41 titles in 86 seasons.
The 87th edition, 2020-21, of the Ranji Trophy was cancelled due to the Corona pandemic. As a result, the 2021-22 Ranji Trophy tournament became the 87th edition of the contest. Madhya Pradesh became the 87th edition’s champion after defeating the Mumbai Cricket team. The 88th edition will commence on 13 December, 2022.
Since its inception, Ranji Trophy has continuously gained its foothold in the Indian cricket arena and emerged as the most prestigious legacy of Indian domestic cricket with each passing season. It has been the breeding ground for the most prominent and incredible talents who played for India at the international level.
In addition, aspiring cricketers work hard to earn an opportunity to play in Ranji Trophy matches. They know that it is the stepping stone to the Indian cricket team since it is associated with the root level of Indian cricket.
Also, the Ranji Trophy matches got support from the state and local cricket fraternity. Cricketing enthusiasts and budding stars continue to follow Ranji Trophy live matches and get updated with the latest Ranji Trophy news.
