Indian Super League
The Hero Indian Super League also known as ISL is India’s premier football championship that was established on October 12, 2014. Till date, eight seasons have kicked off out of which ATK FC has clinched the trophy thrice including the first time in the inaugural season.
Chennaiyin lifted the cup twice in the 2nd and 4th season winning it back from ATK FC. The 20-21 season saw the addition of another team called SC East Bengal which was won by Mumbai City FC.
The ISL is promoted also by Star India and Reliance and supported by the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Besides, celebrities from the Indian film industry and key industrialists of the country invested deeply in the eleven league franchises that happen to belong from the following cities- Goa, Guwahati, Kolkata, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad and Jamshedpur.
Indian Super League History
The Indian Super League (ISL) began as a tournament and has risen up the ranks in India’s hierarchy of football, becoming the joint highest level football league in India. Indian football has had its origins ever since its colonial days with Asia’s oldest running football tournament, the Duran Cup, originating in the country in 1888.
The cup, named after Sir Mortimer Durand, the then foreign secretary in charge of India, began as a source of recreation for the British diplomat. 133 years later, the sport remains a testimony to not just sporting entertainment, but the freedom struggle too fought on a different front.
When Indian football club Mohun Bagan AC lifted the IFA Shield in 1911, they became the first all Indian team to defeat the British, as they secured a 2-1 win over East Yorkshire Regiment. This win in India’s second oldest football tournament kicked off a fresh wave in the freedom struggle.
However, the structure in India’s league football changed much later post-independence, with the National football league starting in 1996. This transformed to a more marketable enterprise 10 years later with ZEE Sports taking up broadcasting sponsorships and the league was renamed as the ‘I-League’.
However, friction between AIFF (All India Football Federation), India’s Football regulation body and ZEE Sports led to a collapse in the league’s marketing. AIFF began thinking of fresh ideas to revolutionize the game in a country crazy for cricket.
That is when the idea of Indian Super League(ISL) made its way into the pathways of Indian Football with IMG Reliance overseeing the entire procedure. This new Indian Super league (ISL) promised a better deal for Indian football as every franchise had to ensure grass-root development of the sport in the country.
Participating Teams
ATK Mohun Bagan FC
ATK FC is one of the clubs to begin the maiden season of the Indian Super League, the club initially partnered with La Liga side Atletico de Madrid and roped in UEFA Champions League winner Luis Garcia in their first season. They are the most successful side in the league, winning the league title 3 times so far.
In July 2020, Atletico de Kolkata merged with Kolkata-based side Mohun Bagan FC, changing its name to ATK Mohun Bagan. They then began to play from 20-21 season onwards and the club continues with this successful merger carrying along the history and tradition.
In 2021, ATK Mohun Bagan FC made remarkable transfers in the game and acquired Liston Colaco for approximately $161K and Hugo Boumous for $250K.
ATK Mohun Bagan rested third, losing against Hyderabad FC by 3-2 who went to lift the trophy against Kerala Blasters in a penalty shootout.
ATK Mohun Bagan FC will play their first match of the latest season against Chennaiyin on 10th October at 7:30pm. Being the most successful club in ISL history, they have failed to win the league title in the past couple of seasons. As such, they will be looking forward to recreating history this season once again.

Odisha FC
Juventus and Italian legend Alessandro Del Piero once scored for this side. Then the team was called Delhi Dynamos and were one of the earliest teams to join the league. After a change in franchise, it was renamed Odisha FC ahead of the 2019-20 season. This year, the team signed Spanish World Cup winner David Villa as their marquee signing for the upcoming ISL season.
Title winning goalkeeper Amrinder Singh is undoubtedly one of the most significant inclusions for this ISL 2022-23 season. This will be their 3rd season, as such, they intend to play a more aggressive game comparatively and players like VP Suhair, Souvik Chakrabarti and Jerry Lalrinzuala will be key players for the 2022-23 season. Stephen Constantine will coach the team throughout the league.

Hyderabad FC
A partner of Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund for grass-root development, Hyderabad FC was founded in 2020, after Pune City FC, a former ISL side became defunct. Former assistant manager at Barcelona, Albert Roca took charge of the team in January 2020, until returning back to the Catalan squad in August.
They weren’t the most obvious looking team to sustain the playoffs let alone clinch the trophy but they took fans by surprise by lifting the cup in the previous ISL season along with the most number of goals. It just took three good years to realize their ambitions. They scored maximum goals in the league.
Hyderarab FC retains their core team along with some cool additions. With strong foreign contingents along with strong fresh talent, they will be the first team looking forward to defend their title in 2022-23 ISL season.
