Cricket has always been called a gentleman’s game and rightly so the game has been graced by stalwarts like Sachin Tendulkar, Adam Gilchrist, Rahul Dravid, MS Dhoni and others who have played the game with grace and style. There have been many occasions where the fantasy cricket game does get heated up and banter, sledges particularly in Australian conditions happens many times. But the gentleman’s game has given us many memorable emotional moments that made us shed a tear or two.

Here are Top 5 most Emotional Sportsmanship Moments Displayed on a Cricket Ground:

  • MS Dhoni becomes Faf Du Plessis’ physio

This was way back in 2015 when South Africa were playing an ODI in Mumbai against India. Many South African batsmen suffered cramps on that tour and a similar incident happened with the South African Captain Faf Du Plessis who was approaching his century. In an attempt to slog the ball, he suffered a cramp in his back leg and fell on all fours. Dhoni, his CSK Captain immediately played as a volunteer and held his feet in the air helping him to flex his muscles. Later, the Proteas sent their team of physios to help their Captain. A memorable gesture shown by the opposing Captain to his CSK counterpart.

  • Sehwag pulling up Shoaib Akhtar

The rivalry between India and Pakistan has always been for the world to see. In one such international extravaganza, Shoaib Akhtar was seen steaming in at 150+ to the master blaster and in reply, Sachin hit it with a straight bat with double the speed. The result of which was it hit the bowler straight on his ankle. Shoaib fell down and before any Pakistani teammate could come, Virendra Sehwag offered to help who was at the non-striker end. Akhtar & Sehwag have had many banters on the field but this was a major exception. However, they continue to remain brilliant friends off the field even today.

  • Freddie & Lee: The epic Ashes finish

It was the closest Ashes encounter before the Headingley heroics of Ben Stokes last year. This incident is from way back in 2005 when Brett Lee and Michael Kasprowicz held on to their nerves until a Harmison delivery led England to a 2-run victory. Considering this high voltage rivalry between England and Australia, this match helped England win the series 2-1. Brett Lee who batted out of his skins to save the match remained not out on 43 and was devastated as his counterpart’s wicket fell. He sat in disappointment but then one of the most beautiful gestures in Cricket happened. Andrew Flintoff came and sat beside Brett Lee, held his arm around him, congratulating him for his valiant effort for his country, and picked him up. Lee was seen reverting the gesture. (I might have actually shed a tear while writing this)

  • Elliot & Steyn, South Africa v/s New Zealand 2015 WC Semi-Final

One of the most heart-breaking chokes in world cricket happened when the ‘chokers’ South Africa, unfortunately, lost a nail biter to the Kiwis in the 2015 semis. After a valiant effort by AB, the South Africans posted 281 on the board in 43 overs and because of the D/L method New Zealand had to chase a target of 298 in the same amount of overs. The Kiwis played with a sheer masterclass and Elliot, in particular, took Steyn on to the attack, taking the strike bowler’s economy to 8.5 per over. When Grant Elliot played the winning shot at the second last ball of the match, the South Africans were left crying and devastated. Ever seen well built big boys crying? Go and watch the highlights of this epic encounter. The beautiful thing, however, was the way Grant Elliot went to a fallen Dale Steyn and picked him with his arms congratulating him for a great fight.

  • Kohli & Smith, World Cup 2019

In a league match last year in the World Cup, Virat Kohli was seen displaying some of the best gentleman behaviors the world cricket has ever seen. A guy who used to be one of the most controversial players was awarded the fair play award by the ICC because of this noble gesture. Virat Kohli came out to bat and observed that the Indian crowd was booing over Steve Smith considering his past sandpaper incident. Kohli immediately went to the crowd’s side and gestured to everyone to stop booing and instead clap for the Australian to congratulate him on his epic comeback. Smith came and gave Kohli a high five for his support. In a conference, Virat was heard saying “As the ambassador of the game in my country it is my duty to protect the dignity of the game and if it’s my country’s people doing something bad then it’s my responsibility to correct them!”
