Did you know Mumbai Indians (MI), the most successful team in the competition’s history also has their own set of MI lowest scores in IPL? Winning the Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy four times in a row in 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019 is known fact to all.

Truth be told, Mumbai Indians almost always get off to a bad start; it takes them some time to find their rhythm, but once they do, they are almost always the favorites to win the tournament.

As such, despite winning the coveted trophy several times, Rohit Sharma and company occasionally put on poor performances. With several disastrous performances in the early IPL, Mumbai Indians have had their share of struggles.

Kings XI Punjab.

Mumbai Indians scored their lowest score in IPL against KXIP. The match was played at Mohali in April 2011. Following a strong start, Punjab was able to amass 163 runs for the cost of just 8 wickets, with Munaf Patel taking 5 of those wickets. The overall total was disappointing, especially considering the Royals team’s inability to build on a strong start provided by the top order. Having chased 164 runs, MI didn’t have the greatest of stars at that time.

Sachin Tendulkar and Aiden Blizzard were back in the pavilion, and Mumbai Indians needed 164 to win. By the end of the 5th over, they were three down. The remaining members of the squad had trouble getting going before they were eliminated for 87 runs in 12.5 overs, their lowest score in competition history.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

Mumbai Indians matched their 2nd-lowest IPL total from seven seasons ago when they played against Sunrisers Hyderabad in the 2018 IPL. The match was played at Wankhede stadium in April 2018. As the toss winner, MI decided to bowl first. The choice appeared to be wise as Mumbai Indians bowlers bowled Sunrisers Hyderabad out for 118, with each bowler taking two wickets.

Given the team’s strength and depth at the plate, the aim of 119 appeared moderate. However, on that day, the MI squad crumbled like a house of cards, so that was not to be. SRH knocked out the entire team for 87 runs in just 18.5 overs

Not a single player was able to score in double figures, with the exception of Suryakumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya, who were the highest scorers with 34 and 24 points, respectively. Sunrisers Hyderabad won the game by 31 runs.

Delhi Capital

Mumbai Indians scored their 3rd lowest score in IPL against Delhi Capitals. The match was played at Wankhede stadium in April 2012. Mumbai Indians opened the innings with Davy Jacobs and Richard Levi in this matchup with Delhi Daredevils in 2012. The plan failed, as both of them were dismissed with just one run before the end of the 4th over.

Rohit Sharma was expected to steady the ship, but as the Delhi bowlers trampled through the MI batting order, the hitman ran out of partners. Mumbai Indians were bowled out for 92 runs in 19.2 overs, with the best score coming from captain Harbhajan Singh’s 33. Delhi Capitals won the game by 7 wickets.

Rajasthan Royals

2013’s matchup against RR was all about the bowlers, but only the Rajasthan bowlers. The match was played at Jaipur in April 2013, where Rajasthan Royals batted first and scored 179 runs while losing 3 wickets, with Ajinkya Rahane getting an unbeaten 68. Chasing 180 runs, Mumbai Indians batsmen buckled under strain from the Royal bowling attack when they needed 180 runs to win.

The Royals knocked out all the MI team for only 92 runs in 18.2 overs. Only one batsman managed to score in double digits, trailing Dinesh Karthik and Ambati Rayudu who each scored 30 and 28 runs. Rajasthan Royals won the game by 87 runs.

Sunrisers Hyderabad

The match was played against SRH in May 2016 at Visakhapatnam where Sunrisers Hyderabad batted first and set up a target of 179 runs for Mumbai Indians. The batting line up for Mumbai Indians failed badly in that chase. The fact that their number 8 batter scored the most runs in the whole innings says a lot about how haphazard their batters were that evening.

Before the powerplay ended, Mumbai Indians had half of their team back in the pavilion with the score at 30. While Harbhajan Singh’s unbeaten 21-ball innings gave the total some respectability, Mumbai Indians were bowled out for 92 runs in 16.3 overs, so the outcome was never in doubt.

Rajasthan Royals

MI scored their 6th-ever lowest score in the IPL against RR. The match was played in Jaipur in April 2011. Having batted first, Mumbai Indians scored only 94 runs on board for the loss of 8 wickets in 20 overs. Nobody scored even 20 runs from the MI team. Rajasthan Royals won the game easily by 7 wickets with 11 balls remaining.

Pune Warriors

Mumbai Indians scored their 7th lowest IPL score against Pune Warriors. The match was played at Wankhede in April 2012 where Pune Warriors batted first and set the target of only 130 runs to chase but even so Mumbai Indians batting order failed miserably. Only Dinesh Kartik and James Franklin scored 32 runs each and other than that, no one scored enough. Mumbai Indians only managed to score 101 runs in 20 overs while losing 9 wickets. As a result, Pune Warriors won the game by 28 runs.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Mumbai Indians scored their 8th-lowest IPL score against KKR. The match was played at Wankhede stadium in 2012 where the Mumbai Indians batting order utterly failed despite Kolkata Knight Riders setting a goal of only 141 runs to be chased. Mumbai Indians were bowled out for 108 runs in 19.1 overs and lost the game by 32 runs.

Royal Challengers Bangalore

In the IPL, Mumbai Indians’ score against RCB was their 9th lowest. The match was played at the International Cricket Stadium in Dubai in 2021. RCB batted first and set up a target of 166 runs to chase. In reply, Mumbai Indians gave a good start, but their middle order failed to capitalise on the initial pace and bowled out 111 runs 18.1 overs with 11 balls to spare. Royal Challengers Bangalore won the game by 54 runs.

Kolkata Knight Riders

Mumbai Indians 113 runs against KKR ranks as their 10th-lowest team score in IPL history. They were dismissed for just 113 runs against the Kolkata Knight Riders on May 9, 2022, at the Dr. DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai. Kolkata Knight Riders set up 166 runs on board to chase but Mumbai Indians’ batting order collapsed and they were bowled out for 103 runs in 17.3 overs. The Knights Riders won the game by 52 runs.

Conclusion

Mumbai Indians is a very consistent team, performing in bigger tournaments. However, no team is perfect. Many times they have put up disappointing performances and when their first order doesn’t give the start that the team requires and few wickets fall in quick succession, they usually put up a score that becomes a headline for a few following days.
