What started as a much anticipated T20 series ended not in the best way possible for South Africa. After going 1-1 in the ongoing T20 tournament against Australia, they had a very good chance to clinch this one at home but, boy did they do a blunder! Australia took home the series after a comfortable win 97 runs at the Newlands, Capetown. Fantasy Cricket players would have earned lumps of real cash if they’d chosen Aaron Finch & David Warner as their Captain, Vice-Captain.
Let’s take a look at what exactly did the Proteas do wrong in the 3rd and final T20I against the Kangaroos.
As it Happened
1. Unstoppable Finch, Insane Warner
The best opening pair in the shortest format of the game was on song as Quinton De Kock won the toss and put the Aussies to bat first. Finch changed gears right from the start of play taking advantage of the powerplay and the fact that the pitch would slow down later in the day. Warner caught up quickly as he smashed one out of the park to Nortje going past run-a-ball. Both scored 50s in quick succession and built up a partnership of 120 runs before Warner chipped one in the air to be caught by Miller.
- South Africa come back, Smith gives finishing touch
Lungi Ngidi, Tabraiz Shamsi gave a good comeback to the Proteas as they dismissed Finch followed by Warner and Wade, Marsh followed after that. The scoring rate fell dramatically after the dismissal of both openers. KG Rabada bowled a wonderful delivery onto Steve Smith’s toes that completely outfoxed the number 1 test batsman and shattered his stumps. Rabada was left disappointed after the delivery was called a no-ball. Smith took the maximum of this opportunity and made up 30 runs in just 15 balls to give Australia a strong total of 193 which became the highest 1st innings score in a T20 at Capetown.
- Captain fails to deliver in the finale
With 10.5 credits on the BalleBaazi app, Quinton de Kock started off with a boundary against Mitchell Starc. The Captain had been in unbelievable touch and was supposed to go big in this game too until Starc bowled a magical spell and got him out bowled. South Africa’s hopes were shattered as they had lost their best batsmen and the rest of the players didn’t have the muscle to pull off this blinder. Faf du Plessis followed after flirting with an outside off delivery and got caught at 3rd man by Adam Zampa.
- Klaasen-Dussen give hope but the Proteas derail eventually
After a couple of sixes and boundaries from Rassie van der Dussen and Henreich Klaasen, the South Africans came back in the game a bit but Australia continued to take the grip of the run-chase. This turned into the batsmen making silly mistakes and throwing their wickets away. South Africa did not get any backbone strength and were eventually reduced to a meagre score of 96.
