Dale Steyn, the South-African champion returned to international cricket since he was in recovery due to an injury, but he suffered a shoulder inflammation during the events of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and was made to leave. Australian pacer, Nathan Coulter-Nile was replaced in Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) squad, but Steyn could only play in two games before his recent injury. He was made to go back home for recuperation and the Proteas are now trying to regain the veteran pacer’ health before the World Cup initiates on 30th May 2019.
Dale took 4 wickets in two games in this very IPL at an average of 17.25 ever since he played in the tournament in 2016. The South-African team management has made sure that the injured soldier regains his fitness and is advised rest ahead of the World Cup. The 35-year old will be going through an assessment once he gets back home and a decision would be taken then. Steyn has been the highest wicket-taker for SA in Tests with 439 scalps and would be playing in his final World Cup alongside a few in the squad.
Cricket South Africa stated in a media release,” Steyn will be assessed by a shoulder specialist and measures will be put in place to get him ready for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in England and Wales next month.”
The Royal Challengers Bangalore wished for the veteran pacer’s speedy recovery and Captain Virat Kohli also sent his best wishes. In a tweet, Kohli wrote – “Speedy Recovery mate! You’re a champion on and off the field.” Kohli will be facing Steyn in the very first match of the World Cup that India play in Southampton on the 5th of June.
Steyn played alongside the former South Africa captain, AB de Villiers in the Royal Challengers Bangalore squad, who in fact had made his Test debut with Steyn in the same match. Villiers captained South Africa in the last World Cup, although he quit last year and now plays franchise cricket only!
