Lost Toss: Blessing in Disguise!
Aaron Finch won the toss yet again and surprisingly decided to bat first on a flat track. Kohli was prepared for his comfort zone: Chasing in the lights! His RCB counterpart thought otherwise and then the stage was set for Warner & the Aussie batsmen to put up a huge total on the board. Virat, in the interview said, we got what we just wanted, putting them into bat first!
Early Wickets Derail the Aussies
Soon after the first ball was bowled, Warner edged one to Rahul who stood as wicket-keeper for the second straight time. After drawing first blood, Finch & Smith found themselves in a huge mix up only to lose another wicket in the form of the Australian Captain. Finch was fuming as he went to the dressing room. Now, Smith took it upon himself to make it up for his Skipper’s loss. Australia were reduced to 46-2!
Best Buddies build a Partnership
The Ashes heroes, Smith & Marnus Labuschagne started working the ball and rotating the strike as they put up a 100+ run partnership together, both scoring their individual 50s. Labuschagne (54) looked very comfortable on the road to his first ODI fifty before he got dismissed by Ravi Jadeja, thanks to a stunner by Captain Kohli.
Smith Holds One End
After Labuschagne, Starc was sent as the pinch hitter but he got out in the same Ravindra Jadeja-over. Carey came in and after piling up 35 he too perished as Shreyas Iyer took an unbelievable catch on the boundary. Smith scored his 1st ODI Century in India and made 131 off 132 balls as he tried to stop one end before he too, was dismissed by Shami and caught by Iyer at mid wicket.
Shami the man!
Mohammad Shami took 4 wickets and his death bowling was effective once again when he sent back Smith, Cummins & Zampa. This helped India to contain Australia at less than 300 as they could only manage 286-9. Jasprit Bumrah, was not amongst the wickets yet again but the pressure he created on the Australian batsmen was unmatched as he bowled at the economy of 3.80. As a result, the other bowlers like Jadeja picked 2 & Saini-Kuldeep managed to pick one each as well.
India Replies Strongly
After putting a manageable total, the Aussie bowlers found them all over the place with Rohit & Rahul firing at the top of the order right from the word ‘go’. Dhawan injured himself while fielding in the 1st innings so KL replaced him at the top of the order; but couldn’t do much as he perished for 19. Kohli came in & the 2 senior players showed some effortless class to give India a strong foundation in the chase. Rohit became the anchor & Kohli supported him like he always does.
Another 100 for the Hitman
After failing in the 1st ODI and the inability to convert a good start into a big innings in the 2nd, Rohit went on to score a century against Australia on the same ground where he scored his first ODI double hundred. He was classy and it seemed like he was getting way too much time to attack the ball as he caressed every spinning delivery coming on to him for a six. He hit Finch for a 91 m maximum and left the Aussie think tank clueless before he departed for a well-made 119.
Consistent Virat, Confident Iyer
Virat Kohli made this match a nightmare for Pat Cummins as he was putting the no. 1 test match bowler away on every part of the ground. Drives, cuts and pulls as he powered himself to yet another 50 in a run-chase. Shreyas Iyer, who struggled big time in the first 2 Odis came out and batted like a champion at no. 4. The way he built his innings was remarkable: taking the pressure off from Kohli and approaching the target with ease without taking too many risks. Kohli departed at 89 when he was bowled by Hazelwood; trying to smash another one for six over mid-on. Manish Pandey came in and concluded the game with two flamboyant straight drives for a couple of boundaries and India won the bilateral series quite comfortably in the end.
What started as a nightmare (10 wicket loss at Wankhede), ended like a dream for Team India. The unit is now more confident before they leave for the New Zeas to play against the Kiwis and take the Jungle Safari to the next step.
