How many times have you watched a live game of cricket where a certain player solely changes the course of the game? In the recent England v/s West Indies fantasy cricket test match at Old Trafford, such a display of cricket was seen from one of the best test cricket bowlers Stuart Broad who shone not only with the ball but also played a vital blistering knock in the first innings. England outplayed West Indies as Broad entered the 500-wicket club and won the series for his side 2-1.
Let’s take a look at the rain-interrupted proceedings of the 3rd test match between England and The West Indies.
Pope & Buttler Steady a Sinking Ship
England began proceedings with the bat as Rory Burns made a fighting 57 after England kept losing wickets from the other end. After Burns’ departure, Jos Buttler came in and scored his first 50 after 16 test innings along with Ollie Pope who was playing at his absolute best on Day 1. He was punishing everything wide on the offside and even though Windies were a tad bit lousy in the field, England batted really well during the last session of day 1 of the 3rd test match.
Broad with the Bat
When Stuart Broad came in to bat in the 1st innings after Pope & Buttler’s fine knocks, England were struggling to make a big score beyond 300. With Dom Bess batting in typical test cricket style, Stuart Broad took the Windies’ bowlers to the cleaners as he smashed the red ball into all directions. Broad hit 9 fours and a six for his 62 off just 45 deliveries. The left-hander helped England reach a fine score of 369 in the first innings
Broad’s Six-fer
West Indies batting line up came in and went away apart from a small 68-run partnership between Holder & Dowrich. The star of the innings was Stuart Broad with figures of 6/31 in 14 overs as he picked some vital wickets alongside his partner James Anderson who picked 2 scalps at an astonishing economy of 1.75. The West Indies batting line up clearly was struggling against a strong England bowling attack.
Captain’s Knock & Opening Match-Made in Heaven
In the 2nd innings of the test match, England’s Sibley and Burns looked super solid as both scored valiant 50s and scored over a 100-run opening partnership. English Cap Joe Root came in and blasted through the bowling attack of West Indies as he scored a quickfire 68 to give England a good quick lead. As we were waiting for Burns’ century, he got dismissed at the score of 90 and that is when Joe Root declared the innings with a handsome 399-lead over the Caribbeans.
Broad’s 500th Scalp & Woakes’ Fifer Close The Series
England’s bowling attack went full-throttle to wreck the West Indian batting unit. Broad picked Kraig Brathwaite as his 500th test wicket, the same opponent that was dismissed by James Anderson for his 500th wicket. Woakes came in and did the remaining damage by picking up his fifer in the test match. Broad picked 4 wickets, taking his tally to 10 wickets in the match as he closed the test match by picking the last wicket in the form of Blackwood.
Stuart Broad was adjudged the man of the match and England’s man of the series while Roston Chase was chosen as West Indies’ player of the tournament. England won the comeback test series by 2-1.
