In an interesting turn of events, India’s leading learning app- Byju’s has replaced Oppo on the sponsorship of the Indian Cricket Team. Oppo- the Chinese smartphone giant, that signed up the deal in 2017 paid INR 4.61 crores to BCCI for every bilateral series and Rs. 1.56 crores for every ICC event.
According to a Times report, Byju’s will be replacing the deal on the same amount until the year 2022. Oppo has walked out of the deal stating that the same seems to be ‘extremely high and unsustainable’.
Byju’s – a Bangalore based e-learning startup was founded in 2011 and is a common brand name for Think and Learn Pvt. Ltd. A growing Indian application sponsoring the Team India jersey is a really cool move. The last homegrown sponsor was Star India- that paid Rs 1.92 crore for bilateral matches and INR 61 lacs for every ICC event to the BCCI.
Virat Kohli and his team will be seen sporting the jersey from September 15 during their series against South Africa. Till then for the Windies tour, Oppo remains as the sole sponsor. The deal is presently laid out till the year 2022, however, given the last 2 sponsorships, we can never be sure about the ‘sustainability’. Star India and now Oppo had both walked out of the sponsorship much before the original contract end date. Let’s just hope this desi combination walks a long way.
