In 1982, the Gujarat Government donated 100-acre land  to build a stadium in the name of  Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (India’s first Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister). The Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel stadium took 9 months to get completed. Since then, many international cricket matches have been hosted here.

In February 2021, the stadium was renamed as Narendra Modi Stadium from Motera Stadium by the Gujarat Cricket Association in the name of current Prime Minister Narendra Damodar Modi after major renovation work.
