It was the biggest fantasy cricket rivalry at the home of cricket in 2019. The Ashes was placed perfectly with Australia leading the series 1-0 and all that was left was to witness the rivalry between English prodigy Jofra Archer & test expert Steve Smith. In came a fierce bouncer from the West Indian born pacer and hit Steve at the back of his ear leaving him in concussion. The world witnessed the entry of the 1st concussion substitute ever, Marnus Labuschagne making his way to the Lord’s cricket stadium.
Marnus Labuschagne, a 25-year old that time was simply impeccable. Even though he was hit on the helmet on the 3rd delivery that he faced against Archer, his feet movement explained a lot about the confidence he carried in that innings.
Early Life
Born in Klerksdorp, South Africa in 1994, Marnus shifted to Australia with his father getting into the mining business and grew up speaking Afrikaans as his 1st language. He began studying English when he started attending school in Brisbane.
Career Kickstart & International Debut
Not only in today’s times but since junior cricket happened to him, Labuschagne was a consistent performer in U-15, U-17 & U-19 cricket. On account of his performances, he made his test debut in 2018 against Pakistan with Cricket Australia’s Baggy Green 455. Having debuted in alien conditions against Pakistan, it was no surprise that he failed as an all-rounder but it was his leg-spin that turned heads as he was able to pick several scalps in that tour.
The Climax
The turning point of his life can be easily said was the Ashes of 2019 where he performed consistently and played a great second fiddle the dominating Steve Smith. He has been in a honeymoon phase of his test career since then and has also been given games in ODIs. He debuted in ODIs against India and showed consistency in the shorter format as well with his batting style and adjusting abilities.
Accolades from the ICC
Labuschagne won the ICC emerging player of the year of 2019 and deservingly so owing to his crazy batting average of 63 in tests. He has played only 14 test matches and has scored 4 hundred, 1 double century, and 8 fifties for his country. How insane is that! No surprises that he will be a mainstay for quite some time and the future of cricket Australia is in great hands with him leading the way.
Legends Impressed
Sachin Tendulkar, in a recent interview, exclaimed, “I saw that innings of him with my father-in-law and straightaway knew that this guy is special because your feet usually don’t move under such tense situations. But the way he handled the inning after Smith’s concussion was incredible!” Coming from a legend himself, speaks for the volumes of greatness Marnus possesses as he continues to play well for the country.
An asset that he is, we wish Marnus Labuschagne a very very happy birthday as he continues to conquer the scoreboards for many more years!
