It was only a while ago when Pant was seen as the perfect replacement for MS Dhoni as the finisher. After an explosive IPL season, Pant became a hot topic of discussion and a serious contender to keep the wickets for the Men in Blue at the international level. Some even wanted him to be included in the World Cup squad. Thanks to his stars, he did make his World Cup debut in the recently-concluded edition of the global tournament in England. He earned praises for his defiant innings but was heavily criticized for his poor shot selection and irresponsible approach at crucial stages. He got a start and gave it all away. After India’s tour of the West Indies, Pant is under immense pressure and has to deliver in the upcoming home series against the Proteas.
The 3-match T20I series goes underway on the 15th of September, 2019 and Pant has been given yet another chance. If the Delhi youngster doesn’t perform, his selection for the T20 World Cup 2020 will be under threat. But that’s for the future. His immediate attention ideally should be on finding a place for himself in the ODI series against South Africa, scheduled right after the T20 series.
