Hitting the deck hard & bouncing it up to the torso of Kemar Roach, forcing him to play a tail-ender slog, did Ishant Sharma take his 3rd wicket in the inning and helped India go one up in the series. West Indies managed to pull off their last wicket partnership to 50 runs whereas it took them 9 wickets to score the same number of runs in the initial phase of their 2nd innings.
The stars of the game on the 4th day were Ajinkya Rahane, who finally scored his 10th test hundred after a drought of 2 years & the one & only Jasprit Bumrah who rattled the West Indian line up with his pace & movements on either side of the pitch. The latter reached the milestone of being the fastest to 50 test wickets along with his career-best of 5-7 (yes, you read that right!). Sir Vivian Richards, in an interview, went on to say that he’d rather face Dennis Lily than Bumrah showering praises for the Indian fast bowler.
The day began with India losing Captain Kohli to a Roston Chase slower that spun a little late than the former would’ve anticipated. A leading-edge to the short mid-wicket fielder, & Virat departed for 51. Ajinkya Rahane(102) then took matters in his own hands alongside a very impressive batting performance by the youngster, Hanuma Vihari who unfortunately got dismissed for 93 being the last Indian wicket before Captain Kohli declared the innings at 343/7.
The West Indian batting line up was done all-ends-up by the Indian pace attack with Jasprit Bumrah sending the stumps rolling four times along with Ishant & Shami picking up 3 & 2 wickets respectively. Roston Chase (12), Kemar Roach(38) & Miguel Cummins(19) were the only Caribbean batsmen who could reach double figures. With this win, Virat Kohli became the first Indian Captain to secure 12 overseas test wins overtaking Sourav Ganguly & equalled the record of 27 test victories of Captain MS Dhoni.
The 2nd and last test of the tour begins on the 30th of August at Sabina Park.
