The Ashes began on a high at Edgbaston on Thursday amongst the most enthusiastic crowd the cricketing world has ever seen in a test match after a long time. While the Australian crowd was busy sledging the English fielders the, the England crowd wore masks of a crying Steve Smith (the face he made after his Sandpaper confession).
Australia won the toss & chose to bat first on a typical English wicket where the ball was moving in and out, completely outfoxing the batsmen as they struggled big time and finished at 284 all-out.
The lone warrior from the Aussie line-up was the ‘Man of the Ashes- Steve Smith’. After Australia was 17/2, he came to the crease welcomed by some heavy boo-ing from the crowd. 170 minutes into the innings and the crowd rose to some epic class shown by the Australian.
He hit 16 fours and 2 mammoth sixes in his well made 144 in 219 balls. This was his 9th century in the Ashes and a slap in the face of all his critics. Smith, today showed how it’s done and that the comeback is always bigger and better than the setback. It was an innings encapsulated with class, aggression and the hunger to perform for his team despite all the allegations and the past that’s been haunting him for a while now.
Steve Smith was the only centurion for Australia and in reply England have made 364/8 thanks to a Rory Burns century. The Test match continues as England are marching towards a handsome lead making it tougher for the Aussies. Stuart Broad bagged another fifer in the Ashes as the match is poised comfortably in the English control.
