Due to England winning the 2019 World Cup, a huge controversy emerged because of a perceived misinterpretation that led to on-field umpires giving away one extra run to England last Sunday.

England won their maiden World Cup last Sunday and many people have questioned ICC’s rules and its interpretation by the on-field umpires. A huge controversy arose because of perceived misinterpretation of rules by the umpires, which led to them giving England one extra run. ICC has reacted to this controversy now, where an ICC spokesperson said it was against the policy to “comment on any decisions (made by the umpires)”.

The very spokesperson later added that on-field umpires take decisions based on their interpretation of the rules in the ICC rule book – “The umpires take decisions on the field with their interpretation of the rules and we don’t comment on any decisions as a matter of policy.”

The biggest controversy ever that encircled England’s win was observed by people when former umpire Simon Taufel declared that the England team were given one extra run after the ball had deflected off diving Ben Stokes’ bat. Simon Taufel, a five-time winner of ICC’s Umpire of the Year Award, had said that on-field umpires had made a “clear mistake” when they gave England 6 runs instead of 5.

Taufel referred to ICC’s Law 19.8 that clearly states that batsmen are only given one run if the batsmen have crossed when the fielder releases the ball. Ben Stokes, the England batsmen and Adil Rashid hadn’t crossed when Martin Guptill threw the ball and should have been only awarded 5 runs, including 4 overthrows.

However, on-field umpires Marais Erasmus and Kumar Dharmasena gave the England team 6 runs on the 3rd last delivery, along with bringing Ben Stokes on the strike which made them tie the match in the regulation 50 overs. In a recent development, Umpire Dharmasena has admitted this umpiring error.

Why were England crowned as the winners of the World Cup? It was because of their superior boundary count after 102 overs of play that couldn’t separate the two teams.
