We thought that we may have to wait for the semi-finals to watch the leading wicket-taker in ICC World Cup 2019, Mitchell Starc, break the record of yesteryear Australian legendary bowler, Glenn McGrath. But we guess Starc was more impatient than all of us. After a disappointing first spell against South Africa in the last league match of this year’s World Cup, Mitchell Starc bounced back and levelled McGrath’s record of most number of wickets taken in a World Cup tournament. Starc took his tally of wickets in this edition of the World Cup to 26, same as McGrath’s. While the former is averaging 16.61 and has done it in just 9 innings, the latter’s average stood at 13.73 and it took him 11 innings to set the record.

Mitchell Starc dismissed Jean Paul Duminy, who was playing his last ODI, and Dwaine Pretorious to break this long-standing record. McGrath achieved this massive feat in the year 2007. Starc went for 26 runs in his first three overs and was looking for a wicket till the 47th over.  Duminy was his 25th wicket in this tournament and he got the 26th wicket in the second last ball of the match. He bowled his lethal signature Yorker to dismiss Pretorious, finishing with the figures of 2-59.
