India skipper Virat Kohli rose to the challenge on Sunday against Pakistan and added another feather to his cap by becoming the fastest player in the history of the game to cross the 11,000-run mark in ODIs.
In recent news, Virat Kohli achieved the world record of becoming the fastest player to score 11,000 one-day international runs on Sunday. Kohli reached this milestone while batting in the World Cup match against Pakistan at Old Trafford, when he flicked Hasan Ali for a four down to fine leg to take his score to 60. With this, he added another feather to his cap!
In 222 innings, Kohli achieved the feat as he went past Sachin Tendulkar who took 276 knocks to go past the 11,000 run-mark. Ricky Ponting reached the milestone in 286 innings, while Sourav Ganguly took 288 innings to achieve the feat.
Kohli already holds the record for being the fastest to 10,000 ODI runs. He also became only the third Indian after Tendulkar and Ganguly and ninth cricketer overall to get to 11,000 ODI runs.
The team captain missed out on an opportunity in India’s third group stage match against New Zealand in Nottingham which was called off due to rain without a single ball being bowled.
Kohli also has 6613 runs from 77 Tests and 2263 runs from 67 T20 Internationals.
On Sunday, he brought up his 51st ODI half-century off 51 balls, his second 50 on the trot. When the rain stopped with India on 305/4 after 46.4 overs, Kohli was unbeaten on 71 off 62 deliveries. He first played second fiddle to Rohit Sharma (140) before changing gears as Hardik Pandya (26) struggled to find the middle of the bat.
Virat Kohli is expected to break most of Tendulkar’s record in one-day internationals. Early on this year, Kohli swept all 3 ICC awards. He won the ODI player of the Year, Test Player of the Year and the Cricketer of the Year. He has been in sensational form over the last 4 years – since WC 2015 and has been the most prolific run-scorer in ODIs.
India’s final score of 336 is the highest score by a team against Pakistan in World Cup history, bettering England’s 334-9 at Nottingham scored earlier in the tournament.
