BBL – Big Bash League 2022-23 Schedule

How To Play

The Big Bash League (BBL) is an Australian professional franchise twenty20 cricket league sponsored by fast food-chicken outlet KFC. The BBL replaced the previous competition, the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash. It features eight city-based franchises instead of the six state teams which had participated previously. The winner of BBL 11 was Perth Scorchers who beat Sydney Sixers by 79 runs in the final match. BBL matches are played in Australia during the summer; in December, January and February.

BBL Opening Fixture

The opening fixture of the BBL season will be played between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars. This might seem like a lop-sided contest given the outcome has always edged favourably towards the Melbourne Stars who have won 10 out of their 17 matches against Sydney Thunder.

Will this be a chance for Sydney Thunder to assert their dominance or will Melbourne Stars outplay them? This remains to be seen. With a lot of squad changes in the draft, the result is less likely to tilt overwhelmingly towards the Melbourne Stars. The following table lists down the matches and the venues in which they will be played in.

Big Bash League 2022-2023 News

PCB bars players for the BBL 2022-23 schedule

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to deny NOCs to Pakistani players for the upcoming BBL , citing the players' packed schedules at home. PCB has not confirmed whether its players will be allowed to play in the newly-introduced International Premier League T20 (ILT20) in the UAE or CSA's T20 league. None of the Pakistani players have entered the BBL draft as of yet.

After Ramiz Raja became chairman of the PCB, he changed the policy of allowing Pakistani players to play in leagues besides the PSL. It is unclear whether this policy still stands. The denial of NOCs for the Big Bash League is likely to hurt Pakistani players’ bank accounts; they might not be able to play in the Indian T20 Premier League. The issue has taken a backseat for now as Pakistani players were set to be compensated with lucrative contracts from PSL franchises.

Forgotten Stars in Big Bash League schedule draft nominations

Unmukt Chand, the first Indian to play in Big Bash League (BBL), has put his name forward for a return to the competition after becoming the first-ever player from his country to represent one of the clubs in Australia's premier domestic T20 competition. Chand, who retired from all Indian cricket at age 28 and notched just 35 runs from his two games in BBL 06, wasn't retained by Melbourne Renegades.

India-born cricketer Unmukt Chand, however, is not the only player of Indian origin to be putting his hat in the ring for this year's Big Bash League. Another cricketer Harmeet Singh Baddan has registered for the BBL . Like Chand, Baddan has claimed a place in one of the teams after retiring from Indian domestic cricket and shifting base to the USA.

In much the same way that Chand failed to make a mark at the domestic level, Harmeet didn't quite flourish in India, with his last moment of glory arriving back in 2018-19 when he ended as Tripura's leading wicket-taker in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Less than three years later and just days after Chand announced his retirement from international cricket - the bowler decided to quit Indian cricket and shift base to America.

Cricket back on Boxing Day!

The Perth Scorchers have been given the perfect draw for their bid to go back-to-back. The reigning Big Bash League champions in BBL will feature blockbuster home dates while limiting their amount of travel. The Scorchers will need to make only four road trips during the regular season, including an intense January swing that will feature three games in five days in Brisbane and Sydney.

Boxing Day cricket will return to Perth for the first time in three years, with the reigning champions to host Adelaide Strikers at Optus Stadium. It will be the third leg of a monster day of cricket stretching across the nation, with day one of the Second Test between Australia and South Africa at the MCG to be followed by Sydney Sixers hosting Melbourne Stars at the SCG and then the, Perth match from 6:15 pm.

West Indies Duo Back In BBL 2022-23

Three more big names have confirmed their entrance alongside Faf du Plessis in the inaugural BBL draft, with Rashid Khan and West Indies gun, Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo signing up. A BBL statement on Friday announced that the trio, all among the world’s best and most experienced T20 franchise cricketers, had been nominated. Khan has spent five seasons with the Adelaide Strikers, who will have the option to sign the spinner in the draft through its one retention pick.

The 23-year-old is already the BBL’s most successful bowler with 92 wickets in just 61 games. Meanwhile, it will be the first time back to the BBL for Pollard and Bravo since appearances in 2017-18 and 2018-19 respectively. As such, they cannot be selected on a retention pick and may end up at any club.

In addition to these three players, other notable names have also confirmed their participation in this year’s BBL: David Warner (Sydney Thunder), Mitchell Starc (Brisbane Heat), Jason Roy (Melbourne Stars), Ben Stokes (Adelaide Strikers), Glenn Maxwell (Perth).
